St Mark Orthodox Church was founded in 1980. Fr Andrew Yavornitzky, pastor, has been the priest at St Mark's Church since 1987.
St Mark's has several aspects of witness that are carried out. Voting membership is determined through a pledging program. In addition, each year we gather at Avondale Nursing Home (the first home of the parish) at Christmas to sing carols. We also collect and distribute clothing for children through the Rochester neighborhood house (the Mitten Tree Project).
St Mark's also stresses stewardship. All members are asked to assist with the weekly coffee hour and clean-up. Our Care Ministry offers visitation and assistance to the sick, shut-in, and those with special needs.
Education is another important aspect of church life. Church School classes are held from September - May and Adult Education is held at that time on Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM, and an adult Bible study is conducted weekly. Check the bulletin section for more information. A parish library contains books and audio tapes which may be checked out. Special study sessions are also held for catechumens, marriage preparation, etc. We host an outside speaker night, where parish members can speak on relevant and topical subjects twice a year. And a summer vacation Church school program was recently added.
St Mark's is active in the area of missions. An Alms box is provided to those who wish to contribute towards charitable efforts on a continuing basis, with distribution made at the discretion of the pastor. Special collections are taken as need arises for disaster relief, ad hoc charitable and mission efforts. The parish also actively participates in the annual OCA appeals for charity, mission, and seminary; money is also budgeted for other charity and mission efforts.
As we head towards the future, St Mark's community will continue in its efforts to grow in the love and understanding of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ through Worship, Witness, Community/Family involvement, Education, Mission, and Stewardship.
